How Animated Cartoon Shows and Bible Stories Inspired My Indie Christian Superhero Comic Series

The Spidercade Universe

Every now and then, I'll get comments that say my series is packed full of imagination and creativity. Because it's not everyday where you see a series with relatable talking alien anthropomorphic creatures who fight violent monsters and cosmic threats inside a Christian-based universe.

When people occasionally ask what inspired me to create the Zero Hour Epsilon Force comic series (and by extension, Spidercade Studios), the answer comes from a few very different places. The big two are animated cartoon shows and the Bible.

Growing up, I actually didn't read comics much. Instead, much of my inspirations came from animated superhero shows that were running at the time, usually the ones that were on Saturday mornings. Series like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (specifically the 2003 series), Sonic X, The Spectacular Spider-Man, Yu-Gi-Oh!, The Batman, Dragon Ball Z Kai and many other cartoons captured my imagination.

I also have some vague occasional memories of the weekday afternoon TV blocks I loved as well. And while I didn't get to see shows like Samurai Jack very often due to not having cable TV, the few times I did get to watch them on Cartoon Network contributed a lot to my inspiration as well.

These shows featured colorful characters, exciting adventures, and heroes who faced overwhelming odds. These stories taught me that a great superhero is more than just powers and action scenes. The best heroes have to overcome challenges, make difficult choices, and grow as people. And sometimes, these heroes even address relatable real-world issues like Static Shock for example. These lessons stayed with me long after the television was turned off.

At the same time, I grew up learning Bible stories that contained many of the same elements that make superhero stories compelling. Stories were filled with courage, sacrifice, faith, and perseverance and also heavily contributed to my inspirations particularly when I saw them animated.

One thing that fascinated me was that the Bible also focused on the character of the hero rather than just their abilities. A person’s faith, choices, and relationship with God mattered more than their strength.

When I eventually began creating my own comic series, I wanted to combine all of these influences with my own ideas.

The Appeal of Cartoons

One of the things I always appreciated about classic cartoons was their sense of adventure. Heroes often traveled to strange and bizarre locations like outer space, encountered unusual and powerful villains, and found themselves in crazy situations that seemed impossible to overcome.

That spirit of adventure influenced the world of Spidercade. I wanted readers to experience exciting action battles, science fiction concepts, and larger-than-life superheroes while still feeling connected to the characters behind the powers. The art style of animated cartoons is also partially what influenced the simplistic art of Spidercade.

And like many classic superhero stories, the goal wasn’t only to create action. It was to create relatable characters that readers could actually care about.

Lessons from Biblical Heroes

Bible

Many people may not think of biblical figures when discussing superheroes, but some of the most memorable heroic stories ever told are found right in Scripture.

Moses confronted an Egyptian Pharaoh to free his people.

Samson possessed tremendous power that he used to defeat tons of Philistines but learned some difficult lessons as well.

David defeated Goliath despite looking like he was vastly outmatched on the surface and also became king.

Esther risked her own safety to protect others.

And of course, Jesus saved humanity when he died on the cross and rose again on the third day, eventually returns one day in Revelation to rule the Earth perfectly for a millennium, and judges and stops evil permanently at the end of time.

Many of these stories demonstrate that courage and faith often matter more than physical strength or power. That idea partially influenced some of the themes found in my Christian superhero comic series, more notably in Issue 4.

Creating Christian Superheroes for a New Generation

Because today’s readers have access to countless superhero stories, I wanted Spidercade to offer something different and unique.

My goal was not simply to create another superhero comic. I wanted to create stories that explored faith, morality, forgiveness, redemption and many other themes while still delivering the high-stakes, action and excitement that fans expect from the superhero genre and may not necessarily get from many types of traditional Christian content.

The result is a universe that combines superheroes, action, science fiction, fantasy, real-world issues and Christian themes into a single story world that is not afraid of sensitive topics and intense fights that actually injure and draw blood from the characters.

Why Christian Themes in Comics Matter

Open Bible

Christian themes in comics can provide a unique opportunity to reach readers who may not necessarily connect with traditional teaching methods. Visual storytelling has always been a powerful way to communicate ideas.

Just as Jesus' parables helped communicate important truths, comics can present meaningful themes and life lessons through engaging characters and memorable adventures.

For me, creating comics that have Christian fiction plots is about more than just entertainment. It’s also about telling stories that inspire readers to think about courage, faith, and character while enjoying an exciting story that's full of adventure and about spreading the Gospel in my own way as well.

Looking Forward

Many of the cartoons I watched growing up helped spark my imagination. Many of the Bible stories I learned helped shape my values.

Spidercade exists because of both influences.

My hope is that readers who enjoy Christian superheroes, science fiction, and action-packed adventures will find something meaningful in these stories, just as I found inspiration in the stories that helped shape me.

Whether the inspiration comes from a Saturday morning cartoon or a biblical hero, great stories have the power to stay with us long after they end.
